In life, there are occurrences which are beyond our scope of control and/or influence. You have to be able to roll with whatever comes your way "AS IF". As if you were expecting it. As if it doesn't impact you. As if it was a gift.
I guess to me it means that many things will happen to me over the span of my life. Some will be positive events and others will be negative; however, it is all about how I respond to these events that will affect the total outcome and my life in general. I may choose to respond negatively to events and escalate the situation, or I can choose to focus on the positive and de-escalate the situation. In essence, the life that I live is completely based on my response.
How I react to things determines (usually) whether or not the situation becomes a positive or negative. My attitude can also create a situation where there isn't one. Being proactive and positive will take me a lot farther than being reactive and negative.
When I hear this I think of the question that was once asked me in an interview. "Would you describe yourself as a "rock" or "water". Well, of course your mind goes to the fact that a rock is solid and stands strong, etc. but my mind quickly went to water. I LOVE being around the water and hearing the gentle movement of the waves. Water can be soothing and gentle, but can also be very forcefull at times or when needed to be. The main thing about water to me is that it IS a liquid and thus can take on the shape of a container or flow freely "around" hard surfaces such as rocks or another words Obstacles. I thing the 90% mentioned above makes me think of WATER because I can just let it move around the obstacles and NOT let it stand firm and solid and rigid when life throws them at me.
The perception of everyday situation is what make the difference in our happiness or frustration. Learning how to cope with what life throw to us is at the end deppending on our reaction to whatever is happening. It could be a problem, taking time to think and plan ahead can help us to get a faster solution or reduce the stress, but for something good not taking the time to enjoy it or accept it could mean a lost opportunity for hapiness. Many times we are so concerned with the problem we are facing that we do not realize teh great things that sorround us. The challenge here si to learn how to react to what is happenning in our life and try to found a possitive actitude to deal and learn from it.
I believe this means that there are some events and experiences that occur in my life that I have no control over. However, if I keep a positive attitude during these events and experiences and try to look at the good that can come out of those events and experiences, I may truly learn to grow and change. Having a positive attitude and trusting that everything will turn out to be ok, along with my faith in God, helps me to keep going, even when things are difficult, and reflect on the gifts and blessings I have in my life.
The outcome of the situation that we're in is always determined by how we react to it. A good situation can remain a good one if we respond in a positive manner and vice versa. Our attitude about the circumstances that we are faced with has a huge impact on not only ourselves but the people that we interact with. People tend to gravitate to those people that have positive attitudes about what life throws at them. They in turn feed off of that and it radiates to others. It reminds me of the quote, "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade."
I totally agree with the quote. As a leader in the area of technology teachers come to me with little challenges that are effecting them. I always make time for them, make them feel this is a problem everyone has, and spend the amount of time needed so they feel comfortable with solving the problems. I then empower them. These people then become the next leaders and share what they know with others they work with.
Many times, what happens to us is out of our control. However, how we react is in our control and only ours. We can make the most of it, or we can make ourselves and those around us miserable. Obviously, there are times of tragedy and unfortunate incidents that lend themselves to a reaction that is along those lines. At the same time, if things are "on the fence," we can certainly turn the table.
Yes, I agree. How you react to a situation creates lasting impressions that may be good or not so good. Things happen and happen to individuals, but a persons response to the event makes everyone involved a part of the event. One can react positively or negatively and either may create a good or not so good impression on the event as well. Count to 10 and then react..... Always think of those involved and how to make it good for them.
Well, honestly, I this means that things will come up that you will not actually like or enjoy but it’s not about the situation but it’s about how you handle the situation. I try to always look at the positive in every situation. I’m what many like to call optimistic. I think is a good characteristic to have because it honestly takes a lot for me to react negatively to a situation. I constantly post on FB “Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy” because it’s all about attitude.
To me it means whatever happens to me does not determine how I will feel or the ultimate outcome, I am the one that determines the ultimate outcome because I am the "captain of my soul and the master of my fate". I determine what I am going to do with what happens. I can lay down and quit or I can use it as a motivational tool and strive to excel no matter what. I am the only one that determines how high or how low I will fly.
This comment is so prolific. How we react to something definitely has a role in determining an event's long-term effect on us. When we're inundated with stress, we tend to be more reactive than we normally would. It's important to stand back and gain perspective on a situation. You can always take action after you've considered possible outcomes.
Well, it has been said that the same thing can happen to two different people but two entirely different stories come out of it- as if they didn't both just witness the same thing. It's their vantage point that makes the difference. The same can be said that the same things and can happen to two people and they have two entirely different reactions- one positive, one negative. To me, what these things and the quote mean is that your frame of mind makes all the difference between turning lemons into lemonade or letting the lemons turn you into a sour-puss.
Actually this is a classic view of how leaders handle change and acute decision making. Sometimes, when things happen in our lives, we tend to ponder and ask "why"? Well, in the scheme of the big picture, when one door closes many more open. The individual has to be able to reflect and view the good in all experiences- professional and personal and make a sound decision to move forward and pursue other avenues to justify their whole being. Great leaders strive for successful outcomes. So, the 90% and how one reacts makes a difference in meeting goals and expectations for a calm and peaceful balance in work and play. I believe only the strong survive. Your attitude and integrity rules. MJ
Our reaction to a situation determines the events to follow. In most situations we can control the ultimate outcome by how we react. I learned long ago not to react if I'm angry, but to reflect on it, sleep on it, and then determine the best course of action.
Many times people do not take the time to process what events or situations might have just happened. Instead they react without thinking. I think we have all had a moment like that once in our lives. Afterwards we wish we could have taken a moment to breath and relax before responding or even take back the reaction or what we said. At first glance that is what I took from the quote. However I realize that quote means more.
This is so true. My parents always told me that your attitude determines your altitude. You don't get very far in life if you have a negative attitude. Your reactions to what happens to you in life can have an enormous affect on your health and just about everything. When things happen to you, you need to stop and think about how you are going to react to it. As a leader the spotlight is always on you and others are watching you to see how you are going to react. So as leaders we need to think about our actions.

ReplyDeleteThis means that I should always try to restrain from reacting to situations too quickly or before thinking about the value of my reaction.
